EthCo - Make a difference

EthCo

Teacher support

Once the first three tasks were written it was felt that support materials for the classroom should be available.

A team of writers, active in the classroom at the appropriate levels was brought together.

From East Ayrshire: Klaus Mayer and Elaine Cook. From Argyll and Bute: Fiona Wilson. And from South Lanarkshire: Caroline Pitcathley and Caroline Gibson.

The ‘Development Education Centres’ contributed a list of possible books or websites which could act as initial resources for EthCo in the classroom.

Participating Schools

Across Scotland a number of schools are giving their support to the EthCo tasks.  It is hoped that reports and resources when available, will be placed on this website by these schools for others to see and enjoy.

Every indication at present is that the schools are very enthusiastic and that the tasks are going well with both staff and pupils. Any school wishing to download the materials and ‘have a go’ are most welcome and we would be happy to hear from them and offer support. Simply use the information on our contacts page.

Project Archive

The DfID-funded phase of the EthCo project concluded at the end of March 2011.

This section contains information about activities which ran during that phase, including the Butterfly and EthCo challenges, the EthCo conference and various events and training sessions.

Logo and Song

A Challenge to increase awareness of ‘EthCo’ was put to all schools in session 2008/9. This was to design a logo and create a ‘song for Ethco’. The response was outstanding. The entries were to a very high standard and very difficult to judge. Killermont Primary in East Dunbartonshire won the Logo, and Oban High School in Argyll and Bute composed and performed the winning song. Many other schools were highly commended for their entries and an award ceremony took place at the City Halls in Glasgow.

The Butterfly Challenge

The EthCo Butterfly Challenge ran for session 2009/10. The Butterfly Award was Angela Jackson's dream, a way of inspiring schools to involve their pupils in these issues.

The winners for 2010 were:

Williamwood High School , Lochgilphead High School, Mid Calder Primary School, and Invergowrie primary School

Who all received an EthCo Winner's certificate and a video camera. Congratulations to all Pupils and staff.
