EthCo - Make a difference

EthCo

EthCo was present in the market place and delivering workshops at the very successful 'Learning Teaching Scotland' event held at the Glasgow Hilton Hotel on Tuesday 8th February 2011.

The event 'Developing Global Citizens through RME and RCRME' was very well attended and set out to help delegates examine ways of developing this aspect of Curriculum for Excellence in their schools.

The main theme was a whole school approach to this work, and many examples of good practice were on show.

EthCo attracted considerable interest as it was clear that all aspects being discussed this day could be tackled through a selection from the twenty interdisciplinary EthCo tasks on display.

We also gave out information on the EthCo Challenge for 2011, and information on our offer of free CPD for schools to over 100 delegates.

The following are extracts from the comments on a sample of the tasks, made by delegates in the workshops:

Poverty and the MGGs – allows us to consider homegrown vs global poverty, human rights and responsibilities, children’s rights, monetary value across the world, equality, sustainability, and more.

Health around the World. – teach this through Health and Wellbeing, social studies, people, place, society.

World of Conflict and war – provides an avenue for lots of discussion, and lots of cooperative/collaborative learning. Cross curricular links to literacy, maths, RME, expressive arts, and social subjects. Really like the task as a starting point to provoke thought.

Feed the World – this is an excellent way to get pupils involved in these issues, leads them in to exploring famine, distribution, supply, diet, economics, subsidies, global issues, etc, etc.

Education for All – allows an exploration of what our own education is trying to achieve, the values of education and the effects of poor education. Then the global perspective, gender issues, technologies, the list is endless.

Supporting the MDGs through sport – this is an innovative way to look at the issues in sport and the MDGs. Many many cross curricular links, health issues, ethical issues, sporting issues, behavioural issues, and will really catch the imagination of the pupils.

Equality and the MDGs- Fantastic range of issues which can be explored through this task, the cross curricular links are excellent, RME, social studies, health and wellbeing are well represented. Great!

Digital Age and the MDGs – An interesting aspect of the MDGs which is having a developing impact around the world. The task allows for great imagination from the pupils and at the same time an investigation into ICT, the benefits and risks. Many cross curricular links here.

Climate Change and the MDGs – this is a very topical subject and of course has an effect on all countries. Lots of issues and great for cooperative learning and the interdisciplinary approach.

Sustaining the Environment – this task covers a wide range of issues, and allows for a variety of approaches. Links in to ECO schools, charity work, links to schools in developing countries and other initiatives. Lots of cross curricular links and gives a great structure to pull these issues together.

World Energy and Resources – a great tool to develop discussion on these very topical issues. Lots of links to things the school is doing already so easy to get in the cross curricular links.good focus on the issues of ‘green energy’ lots of good work.
