15. HIV/AIDS and the MDGs
The content of this task can be adapted to suit any Curriculum for Excellence Level.
HIV and AIDS were first recognised in 1981, and since then, the World has struggled to contain the spread of the disease and to find, in the absence of an effective cure, drugs which can help to alleviate the symptoms and prolong the life of those suffering from the disease. Pupils will investigate the origins of AIDS, the spread of the disease, and the measures being taken to fight the disease with particular attention to the Millennium Development Goals. Pupils will explore the role of the World Health Organisation, Governments, and the UN in the efforts to combat the disease.
